You do not need to spend more than $100 on a good pair of everyday sneakers. Most of the classics, the white leather court shoe, the canvas high top, the skate shoe, are still sold well under that line, and the extra money above it mostly buys a name or a trend.
These are the six we would buy, each for a different kind of wardrobe. Every one was live on Amazon under $100 when we checked, though shoe prices move by size and color, so check yours.
Best overall: the Reebok Club C 85, around $62. The Air Force 1 look for less: the Nike Court Vision Low, around $85. The canvas classic: the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star, around $65. Best skate shoe: the Vans Old Skool, around $75. Best for smarter outfits: the Cole Haan Grand Crosscourt II, around $76. Best under $50: the adidas Advantage, around $45.

1. Best Overall: Reebok Club C 85
The Club C is the easiest recommendation under $100 because it gets the basics right. A leather upper that wipes clean, a die-cut EVA midsole that absorbs impact, a padded low collar and a removable foam sockliner lined with soft terry. It is a clean, slim tennis shoe that works with jeans, chinos and shorts, and at around $62 it costs roughly half of a New Balance 550 or Air Force 1.
It is also the budget pick in our best casual sneakers ranking, and nothing we checked this month beat it on value.
Reebok Club C 85
A white leather court shoe with an EVA midsole and terry-lined insole, for around $62. The best value in classic sneakers right now.
2. The Air Force 1 Look for Less: Nike Court Vision Low
The Court Vision is Nike's retro basketball shoe at a lower price than the Air Force 1. It has the same 1980s court look, a padded low collar and a perforated toe, with a synthetic leather upper that Nike says uses at least 20% recycled material by weight. At around $85 it saves you about $20 against an Air Force 1.
If you are deciding between the real thing and its rivals, our New Balance 550 vs. Air Force 1 comparison covers fit and sizing, and our Court Vision guide helps you pick a colorway.
Nike Court Vision Low Next Nature
The retro Nike court look with more than 11,000 ratings, for around $85. The easy way to get the Air Force 1 style for less.
3. The Canvas Classic: Converse Chuck Taylor All Star
With more than 30,000 ratings, the Chuck Taylor All Star High Top is one of the most-bought sneakers on Amazon, and the design goes back to a basketball shoe Converse first made in 1917. A canvas upper and rubber sole keep it light and cheap, and it works with almost any casual outfit.
Two things to know. Converse says it runs large and suggests a size smaller than usual. And if you want a sturdier version, the Chuck 70 is the upgrade, which we break down in Chuck 70 vs. Chuck Taylor All Star.
Converse Chuck Taylor All Star High Top
The original canvas high top with more than 30,000 ratings, for around $65. Order a size smaller than usual.
4. Best Skate Shoe: Vans Old Skool
The Old Skool is the skate shoe that crossed over into everyday wear. It has a leather and fabric upper, Vans' signature waffle outsole for grip, and a die-cut EVA insert for support. It is lower, flatter and more casual than a court shoe, which makes it the pick for streetwear and weekend wear rather than smarter outfits.
Vans Old Skool
The classic skate shoe with a grippy waffle sole and a leather and fabric upper, for around $75.
5. Best for Smarter Outfits: Cole Haan Grand Crosscourt II
If your sneakers have to work with chinos and an oxford shirt, the Grand Crosscourt II is the one. It has a leather upper, a slimmer and cleaner shape than a basketball-style shoe, and a lightweight cushioned sole that Cole Haan designs for walking and commuting. More than 12,000 ratings back it up.
Cole Haan Grand Crosscourt II
A sleeker leather sneaker for around $76 that looks right with chinos and a collared shirt.
6. Best Under $50: adidas Advantage
The Advantage is a clean white tennis-style sneaker in the spirit of the Stan Smith, for around $45. The upper is synthetic rather than leather, so it will not age as well, but it looks sharp, it is light, and more than 8,800 ratings say it holds up for everyday wear. If the budget is tight, it is the best-looking pair we found.
adidas Advantage Sneaker
A clean white tennis sneaker for around $45. Synthetic upper, so treat it as a budget pair rather than a long-term one.
Where the Extra Money Goes Above $100
Spend more and you mostly get better leather, a more premium sole, or a name that is in demand right now. The New Balance 550 and the Air Force 1 are both around $107 to $120, and the comfort-first New Balance 990v6 is around $182. Our budget vs. premium sneaker breakdown shows exactly what those dollars buy.
How to Pick in Ten Seconds
Clean and versatile: the Club C. You love the Air Force 1 look: the Court Vision. Casual and classic: the Chuck Taylor. Streetwear: the Old Skool. Office or smarter outfits: the Grand Crosscourt II. Tight budget: the Advantage.
